KJTTI is an initiative involving schools, clubs and Kingston Sports and Recreation Services which is designed to develop opportunities for children and teenagers to learn to play Table Tennis in school clubs. It has been operating for a number of years and is designed to encourage schools to set up extra-curricular clubs. Qualified coaches visit the schools and deliver a set of sessions to introduce the teachers to table tennis and each school receives some free equipment. These teachers are then encouraged to attend a basic coaching course so that the club is sustainable.
Children that take part in the scheme are given the opportunity to join a local club and those showing promise may be selected for competitive squads. The Table Tennis Initiative has produced some fantastic players who have developed their skills and achieved a high standard of competitive play. These players have represented Kingston in the London Youth Games and won Gold in both the girls and boys competitions.
A Table Tennis Tournament is arranged annually and is held during the Kingston Festival of Sport in May. There are singles competitions for boys and girls and team competitions for schools for ages ranging from under 11 s to under 19 s. There are always high numbers attending and application forms are available in schools, leisure centres and libraries or can be requested direct from the Initiatives administrator.
How can your school get involved? If you go to a school in Kingston and your school isn't involved in the scheme yet, tell your P.E. teacher about it and get them to contact Kingston Sports and Recreation Services on 020 8547 5207, or GS Institute on 020 8942 2157.
